almost as old as books

Every New Year marks another annual survival for the FutureoftheBook website now four years old. Thanks to
Craig for his continued technical support and timely inspirations.

Look for continued amazing news from FotB in 2004 with coverage of new directions for the University of Iowa Center for the Book, Booke vs. eBook stuff and important timeless developments in the future of the codex structure. Also follow preparations for our 2005 exposition on
Preservation of the Changing Book.

exemplar Cyborg, The Linotype

The Linotype machine – the mechanical setter and caster that enabled production of daily newspapers- is a an exemplar of the Cyborg. The Cyborg, or thinking machine, is all around us today. But the Linotype exemplifies a perfect symbiosis of interdependence of the operator and the machine neither could produce the daily newspapers without the other.

At the University of Iowa we are reviving this dynamic relationship as we preserve our
model 31 Linotype.

Zephyr Teachout, pioneer Dean blogger

“Sometimes, if youíre inside it, you might forget how massive a change you’ve caused — how a year ago no one knew
Howard Dean and no one saw a way through to a people-based kind of politics. Youíve turned the country upside down, and the pundits topsy-turvy. In the next month, your contributions and actions and outreach will turn the Democratic Party right side up.”

The Dean revolution reverts to an 18th century model when disperate patriots declared their independence from self-serving govenment, but then created, in its place, a progressive government of the people.

***“coming out of the hole” for Dean

The
punxforDean movement (10,000 strong & growing) is bringing out a paper Zine to better serve the computerless constituency. This sector of society is now being motivated to vote for the first time ever. Let’s all
take our country back!

“If you haven’t yet heard.. we are creating a ‘zine “Voices from the Underground” to better reach those that DO NOT have computers. It’s also a way for our rad volunteers to show their creativity and have it handed out to THOUSANDS. This is your chance to REPRESENT your local scene/band and/or yourself! The Dean Scene Zine will be available for download IN the downloads section for you to grab and hand out!”

librarians work for democracy

“Fighting to protect intellectual freedom and equitable access. Promoting the value of libraries in the 21st century. Making a difference in all that we do.” American Library Association (the oldest and largest library association in the world)

Gary and Joyce are at work for
Howard Dean here in Iowa. We are preparing for the Coralville precinct 01 caucus on January 19th. At the moment this appears to be the best way for us to assure the Future of the Book and the future of libraries.

click on any link or stick around for the gallery

Greta Sibley and Daniel Kelm have a very graceful website that provides workshop information from the Garage Annex School. Books in the gallery are spectacular and wonderfully photographed to illustrate the dynamic nature of the mobile book.

future of the book works for future of the USA

What better way to assure the future of books and the high regard of librarians than to work for the Howard Dean campaign? Gary and Joyce have taken up the Crusade so attend our
Dean New Year’s party!

book studies teaching resource

The Future of the Book Bindery and
BookLab of San Marcos have teamed up to produce a useful set of bookbinding models. These will be helpful for students interested in the structure and action of books across time and cultures. Read the
teacher’s prompt for presenting these clever mechanisums.

Blue Oak Bindery portal

Kristin Baum has a wonderful website for her
Blue Oak Bindery. It features much of the book community news for use here in Iowa City. There are some great shots from a recent working
Linotype session.
